A Country Doctor
(Ein Landarzt)

"A Country Doctor" ("Ein Landarzt") is a short story by Franz Kafka written in 1919. The plot follows a country doctor's hapless struggle to attend a sick patient in the cold winter night. A series of surreal events occur upon the journey including a mysterious groom's appearance. The groom supplies the doctor with ethereal horses which transport him directly to his sick patient's bedside; the horses later proceed to watch the doctor treat the patient. However, the doctor shrugs off the patient's ordeal due to ongoing distractions within his personal life. He misses what is revealed to be a fatal wound, and is later thrown out and humiliated by the villagers whom always expect the impossible.
